This is a log taken directly from the game. After hearing the Rune Caster's visions about Barrett's plight, Grumli, Rhyannia and Durith move to Qeynos, where they split up to find traces of the rogue Svennik. Grumli finds by chance Caitlin, the young woman who accused Alruna at her wedding of being responsible for Barrett's plight. Caitlin is discussing with Serinar. Grumli greets them and soon learns that they are talking about Barrett. Serinar was apparently a friend of his.
This happens near the gates of Qeynos. While Caitlin and Serinar are chatting with Grumli, Alruna walks in and demands explanations from the young Caitlin, whom she now knows is Barrett’s sister.
But the tension is high between Alruna, the Holy Priestess of Tunare, and Serinar, another of Barrett’s friends but a dark disciple of Necromancy.
My log begins
right after Serinar threatened to do something rather nasty to Alruna.
Grumli says,
'None shall touch Alruna while I live'
Serinar pauses.
Caitlin says,
'He cares for you too, but just couldn't say it.'
Alruna ducks
behind Grumli.
Serinar says,
'That can be arranged dwarf.'
Caitlin says,
'It wouldn't be right fighting over him.'
Alruna turns
an icy glare upon Serinar.
Grumli says,
'Yeah yeah. Come over here and try my might'
Caitlin leans
into the wall and weeps.
Serinar says,
'Nor is it to let him run off on a ridiculous quest!!'
Alruna says,
'This child is wounded... In her soul.'
Serinar prays
to the God of Plague.
Alruna comforts
Caitlin.
Caitlin slumps
to the ground.
Caitlin says,
'Why?'
Alruna says,
'What did you say, child? You mentionned my father?'
Serinar slaps
Alruna's hand away.
Caitlin says,
'Noone listens.'
Grumli did't
hear the prayers.
Serinar says,
'What do YOU know of this!'
Alruna turns
an icy glare upon Serinar.
Caitlin says,
'Everyone is so tied up in their own feelings.'
Caitlin cries.
Grumli says,
'You look lost in yours lady'
Alruna says,
'What is this, sorceress?'
Caitlin says,
'Barrett. I'm so sorry.'
Serinar says,
'What have you compelled him to do?'
Alruna says,
'We must help this girl. Can you not see this?'
Alruna blinks
at Serinar.
Serinar says,
'You have "helped" enough. Barrett is lost to us'
Alruna says,
'I do not know what you are talking about.'
Caitlin says,
'He wanted to impress Alruna so he went to help her father.'
Alruna gasps
at Caitlin in astonishment.
Serinar says,
'THAT is what I am talking about'
Grumli says,
'What? She is nutty as a fruitcake! '
Alruna says,
'He did?....'
Alruna blushes
profusely.
Caitlin says,
'He felt that he might free some tormented souls and now he's trapped.'
Serinar says,
'Mind your tongue, lest I remove it!'
Alruna gasps
in astonishment.
Caitlin covers
her face.
Serinar points
at Grumli. Yeah you!
Alruna says,
'NO!'
Alruna says,
'This cannot be !'
Caitlin breaks
into open weeping.
Alruna says,
'I merely told him... I mean... I...'
Serinar seems
lost for a moment.
Grumli looks
defiantly at Serinar.
Alruna comforts
Caitlin.
Serinar meanders
off.
Alruna hugs
Caitlin against her.
Caitlin says,
'He wanted you to feel better. Not to be sad.'
Alruna gently
strokes Cailtin's hair.
Caitlin says,
'He wanted your father to regain his faith so you would be happy.'
Caitlin cries
over Serinar.
Alruna says,
'My sweet child, I understand your pain... And am truly sorry for the part
I play in it.'
Serinar says,
'Tormented souls...'
Serinar says,
'Is it possible?'
Caitlin says,
'He wrote to me and mentioned Befallen.'
Serinar sits
down, feeling a bit shaky.
Serinar nearly
falls over.
Alruna listens
intently to Caitlin.
Caitlin says,
'The other day I had a vision of Barrett in great agony.'
Serinar says,
'No...'
Alruna says,
'A vision?'
Serinar shakes
her head in disbelief.
Caitlin draws
a breath to collect herself.
Serinar listens
intently.
Alruna stares
deep into Caitlin's eyes... Could this child have powers of divination?
Caitlin says,
'He kept saying your name.'
Caitlin points
to Alruna.
Alruna nods
with a sad expression on her face.
Caitlin says,
'And he mentioned Surefall.'
Serinar says,
'Barrett, we...'
Alruna winces
slightly when she hears that.
Serinar trails
off.
Caitlin wipes
a tear.
Alruna comforts
Caitlin.
Caitlin says,
'That's where I found you.'
Caitlin sniffles.
Alruna says,
'My poor Barrett.... Oh, what have you done... You foolish... Noble man.'
Grumli looks
puzzled.
Serinar turns
her teary eyes to Alruna.
Caitlin He
mentioned Serinar too, and a riddle.
Grumli says,
'What has BArett done?'
Alruna says,
'I understand your actions now, my daughter.'
Serinar says,
'I believe I have misplaced blame'
Alruna peers
at Serinar, looking her up and down.
Alruna turns
to Grumli.
Serinar says,
'Befallen, my dream, it makes sense...'
Alruna says,
'He tried to help my father... And yours, in a way, my dwarven friend.'
Caitlin leans
heavily against the wall.
Serinar says,
'But he made it out...'
Alruna says,
'I shall tell you more about this later, friend Grumli.'
Grumli says,
'Oh'
Caitlin says,
'No.'
Serinar bows
her head.
Alruna says,
'What is this, sorceress?'
Caitlin says,
'He's trapped, I saw that clearly.'
Alruna puts
her hand on Serinar's shoulder and turns her around.
Serinar says,
'I had a...vision, though I hesitate to call it that'
Caitlin reaches
into her pouch looking for a bottle.
Alruna raises
an eyebrow at Serinar.
Serinar says,
'It did not make sense, pieces and clips of scenes'
Grumli thinks
that every human females get visions all the time.
Serinar says,
'The last place I saw Barrett, indeed the last I talked to him, was at
Befallen'
Caitlin cries.
Caitlin laughs.
Serinar says,
'My dream, nay vision, also reminded me of this trip'
Alruna ponders
these words.
Caitlin sniffles.
Alruna says,
'And what were you doing in Befallen, sorceress?'
Caitlin says,
'Bottle's empty.'
Alruna raises
an eyebrow at Serinar.
Grumli gets
a soft sport for a woman with no drinks.
Alruna says,
'You were probably up to no good yourself !'
Serinar says,
'Why must you take an accusing tone with me! I do NOT like your attitude!'
Serinar grits
her teeth.
Caitlin leans
her head into her hands and hums a sad tune.
Grumli soft
spot.
Alruna says,
'And I do not like yours... Who's to say that YOU have nothing to do in
his abduction!'
Alruna points
at Serinar. Yeah you!
Serinar says,
'We were seeking a robe of some power for Barrett'
Serinar says,
'At HIS behest, not my own'
Caitlin says,
'STOP IT!'
Grumli thinks
taht Caitin is nuts.
Caitlin says,
'Enough.'
Alruna turns
to face the young woman.
Caitlin says,
'My brother loves you both, isn't that enough?!'
Alruna lowers
her head in shame.
Alruna nods
sadly.
Caitlin says,
'Why must you fight? Why?'
Alruna says,
'I... Thought,... He had forgotten about it... About me...'
Caitlin looks
concerned.
Caitlin says,
'he's a fool not an idiot!'
Serinar says,
'Why? What a ridiculous question! This...wmoan...is the reason
Barrett is gone!'
Caitlin stonps
her foot.
Alruna raises
an eyebrow at Serinar.
Alruna says,
'IS THAT SO?'
Alruna taps
her foot as she looks at Serinar impatiently.
Caitlin says,
'OOOHH You two are insufferable!'
Alruna says,
'Might I ask why?'
Caitlin storms
off.
Serinar says,
'It is. Always believing youself to be above reproach....'
Alruna says,
'See what you've done... Foul viper!'
Serinar says,
'The mighty Tunare guides your actions...'
Alruna stalks
off after the child.
Alruna raises
an eyebrow at Serinar.
Serinar scoffs
at Alruna.
Alruna says,
'Yes, as a matter of fact, she does !'
(Further away, Alruna catches up with the young Caitlin.)
Alruna hugs
Caitlin.
Alruna says,
'Now, now, child.'
Caitlin says,
'Of all the things you had to do Barrett ...'
Caitlin says,
'Why dear brother did you fall for these two...'
Caitlin says,
'why?'
Caitlin cries.
Alruna lowers
her head and mourn the loss of the dead.
Caitlin says,
'You always thought you were level headed.'
Caitlin sniffles.
Alruna says,
'I am sorry ... I ... had no idea his feelings were so strong...'
Caitlin cries.
Alruna says,
'But I assure you, young woman. I *WILL* save Barrett!'
Caitlin gets
a strange look in her red rimmed eyes.
Alruna says,
'Tunare is with me, and through her will, he shall come back to you...
TO all of us.'
Caitlin says,
'The key to the cage.'
Alruna takes
Caitlin's chin and makes her look into her calm elven eyes.
Caitlin 's
voice gets deeper.
Alruna gives
Caitling a reassuring smile.
Caitlin says,
'The release of the spirit.'
Alruna cringes
away from Caitlin.
Caitlin pauses.
Caitlin says,
'The freedom of the damned.'
Alruna gasps
in astonishment.
Caitlin says,
'Is the task.'
Caitlin says,
'Of the answers'
Alruna says,
'Those words!!'
Caitlin says,
'Of this triple wed band.'
Caitlin says,
'The Soul Besieged.'
Caitlin says,
'The Healer in Darkness.'
Caitlin says,
'The heart's true desire.'
Alruna breathes
deeply.
Caitlin collapses
to the ground.
Alruna gasps
in astonishment.
Alruna kneels
beside Caitlin.
Alruna gently
cradles Caitlin in her arms.
(-------------- Grumli and Serinar approach Alruna and Caitlin --------------)
Alruna looks
at Cailtin's face.
Caitlin breathes
shallowly.
Grumli says,
'What is wrong with this woman Alruna?'
Serinar steps
closer.
Alruna mutters
a quiet prayer to Tunare to return conciousness to caitlin.
Grumli eyes
Serinar.
Alruna begins
to cast a spell.
Caitlin feels
much better.
Caitlin takes
a gasping breath.
Caitlin cries.
Alruna says,
'She is wounded.... In her soul, Grumli.'
Caitlin says,
'Barrett.'
Grumli says,
'I saw that. She's nuts'
Serinar sighs.
Alruna says,
'And for once, I am limited in the ways I can cure her.'
Serinar says,
'I wish to help'
Alruna says,
'I know of but one way to do it.'
Caitlin sniffles
and opens her eyes.
Alruna raises
an eyebrow at Serinar.
Alruna says,
'Very well.'
Serinar says,
'Barrett was...a good friend'
Alruna says,
'Caitlin. Caitlin, dear one... Do you remember the words you just uttered?'
Caitlin says,
'Words?'
Caitlin looks
completely puzzled.
Grumli tells
you, 'ok'
Alruna says,
'You do not?'
Caitlin says,
'I ...'
Alruna gasps
at Caitlin in astonishment.
Caitlin says,
'Was it the riddle?'
Serinar says,
'What is it?'
Alruna says,
'You spoke... Hmmm.'
Alruna nods
at Caitlin.
Caitlin looks
frightened.
Alruna says,
'Indeed.'
Serinar says,
'What riddle?'
Alruna says,
'I believe you have powers, child... Powers of Divination.'
Serinar says,
'Someone had better start making some sense here...'
Caitlin wipes
her running nose on her sleeve.
Alruna says,
'I know another who has these powers... She might help you to harness them
to their full potential.'
Alruna lowers
her voice as she speaks to Serinar.
Grumli says,
'A barbarian woman?'
Caitlin searches
her pouch again for a bottle of mead.
Alruna nods
at Grumli.
Alruna speaks
in hushed tones.
Serinar says,
'What is happening here?'
Serinar looks
concerned.
Alruna says,
'She spoke much the same words as Barrett himself spoke at my wedding.'
Caitlin stares
blankly at the ground and hums.
Serinar says,
'What words are these?'
Alruna closes
her eyes, and concentrates.
Caitlin hums
a sad lulaby.
Alruna says,
'The key to the cage.'
Alruna says,
'The release of the spirit.'
Amightyone
says, 'are you farbods friend'
Alruna says,
'The freedom of the damned.'
Grumli refrains
himself to slap Caitlin to get her spirits back.
Caitlin softly
sings a few words.
Alruna says,
'Is the task.'
Alruna says,
'Of the answers'
Alruna says,
'Of this triple wed band.'
Alruna says,
'The Soul Besieged.'
Alruna says,
'The Healer in Darkness.'
Caitlin says,
'the little bird on wing ...'
Alruna says,
'The Heart's True Desire.'
Caitlin sniffles.
Serinar ponders
the words.
Alruna says,
'Does this make sense to you, sorceress?'
Alruna raises
an eyebrow at Serinar.
Caitlin says,
'...singing of trees and daylight...'
Caitlin hums
more.
Serinar says,
'I do not like that term, but it strikes a familiar chord in my mind...'
Alruna kneels
by Cailtin's side and tries to comfort her.
Serinar recalls
her days in the Academy.
Alruna says,
'What term?'
Caitlin shrugs
unknowingly.
Serinar says,
'Sorceress. My powers are no more soceric than yours elf.'
Caitlin takes
a deep breath and releases it abruptly.
Alruna raises
an eyebrow at Serinar.
Serinar says,
'That poem...'
Alruna says,
'And what shall I call you... Soulslaver??'
Alruna frowns.
Serinar turns
a menacing glare to Alruna.
Serinar says,
'Serinar is a fine title. '
Alruna 's
jaw sets in a scowl and she puts her hands on her hips.
Serinar dismisses
her with a wave.
Alruna says,
'Very well... Serinar.'
Alruna says,
'Speak your thoughts.'
Caitlin says,
'Brother, I never understood you.'
Serinar says,
'I may know someone who can help me understand this...riddle'
Alruna says,
'Truly?'
Grumli says,
'Who?'
Alruna 's
face lightens up.
Caitlin sways
slowly and hums again.
Serinar says,
'Bah, only we sorceresses know of such people. I would not want to
share things you are not ready for'
Alruna says,
'Do not play with words... '
Alruna says,
'It is Barrett's life we are talking about.'
Serinar says,
'Yes, it is. I seek answers with my Brothers and Sisters of Darkness
- in the sewers.'
Alruna wrinkles
her nose in disgust.
Alruna snickers
softly.
Alruna says,
'Fitting place.'
Grumli says,
'Only scum live in sewers'
Serinar says,
'Perhaps you would like to visit...we have a pole we could place your head
on'
Caitlin begins
to shed tears again.
Caitlin shudders.
Serinar says,
'Funny dwarf, you smell as if you have lived there your whole life'
Alruna 'eyes
narrow dangerously.
Grumli says,
'Just try do do so'
Alruna says,
'Do not taunt me, vile one.'
Serinar says,
'Heh, there is more power down there than in all of Faydwer!'
Caitlin cries.
Alruna says,
'I've a good idea whose head might find itself on a pole in this city.'
Serinar says,
'Enough.'
Grumli says,
'At least I am not made of what dwells in there'
Serinar says,
'I seek answers - and I will go where I know I might find them. Perhaps
you would be wise to also begin looking about.'
Caitlin says,
'Nobody to help him. Nobody.'
Caitlin cries.
Serinar says,
'Not true Caitlin'
Alruna says,
'Though it pains me to say so, you are right.'
Alruna says,
'Go seek your answers. I will seek mine.'
Serinar says,
'I shall.'
Caitlin cries.
Serinar stalks
off.
Alruna hugs
Caitlin.
Alruna says,
'We must do something for this child... Perhaps the runecaster could help
her.'
Caitlin curls
up as a lost child would and cries.
Alruna gives
Caitlin a motherly hug.
Alruna says,
'Grumli, how did you visit with the runecaster go?'
Alruna raises
an eyebrow at Grumli.
Grumli says,
'It was very interesting my dear Alruna'
Alruna says,
'What did she say... And see?'
Grumli says,
'Well, she talkes about another matter. Very disturbing one'
Alruna looks
concerned.
Grumli says,
'Alruna. I have bad news for you'
Alruna says,
'No!'
Grumli is
about to say something terrible.
Alruna says,
'Please don't tell me Barrett is dead!'
Caitlin cries.
Caitlin says,
'NO!'
Alruna looks
frightened.
Caitlin cries.
Fanandar says,
'what the hell are you talking about?'
Grumli says,
'I don;t know about him, but Grizben is captive '
Alruna says,
'No !!'
You gasp at
Grumli in astonishment.
Fanandar says,
'Yes!'
Alruna says,
'Not Uncle Grizben?'
Grumli says,
'He is captured by some gnolls'
Caitlin heaves
with great sobs.
Alruna says,
'Ah! The vile fiends !'
Alruna says,
'Why was he near their lands? DO you know?'
Fanandar says,
'Yes and he was beaten nearly to death!'
Fanandar laughs.
Grumli says,
'I learned that his fate is binded to you, I and some fiery red bearded
man. BArett I suppose'
Fanandar laughs.
Alruna says,
'# ignore fanandar'
Grumli says,
'No'
Fanandar says,
'you very mean'
Caitlin stops
crying when she hears strange laughter.
Alruna says,
'Very strange... So Grizben's plight would be linked to Barrett's?'
Alruna says,
'This is very strange.'
Grumli says,
'Yes. That is why I try to find him. I want to know how I can help Grizben'
Alruna says,
'We must free him... Do you know where he is? Is he in Black Burrow?'
Grumli says,
'The Barbarian woman asked me to find a thief. He stole some items from
her'
Alruna says,
'A thief?'
Caitlin sniffles.
Grumli says,
'With these items, she could give some more ansers.'
Alruna says,
'What does this have to do with Grizben? Surely his life is more important
than soem items.'
Alruna says,
'Aaah'
Alruna says,
'I see.'
Alruna says,
'She is wise.'
Grumli says,
'HE might be in BlackBurrow. I heard of some other place too, called Splitpaw'
Alruna says,
'Do you have any leads as to where this thief could be?'
Caitlin nods.
Alruna says,
'Hmmm'
Caitlin looks
up slowly through her hair.
Caitlin says,
'I might know.'
You peer at
Caitlin, looking her up and down.
Grumli says,
'He is supposed to be in Qeynos. He is linked woth some rebel called Rodcet
Nife'
Grumli says,
'Ever heard of him?'
Alruna giggles.
Caitlin laughs.
Alruna says,
'Rocet Nife is a god, Grumli.'
Grumli says,
'oh'
Alruna says,
'He has a white marble church in this city.'
Alruna says,
'Right there.'
Alruna points
straight ahead.
Caitlin tries
to hide a grin.
Alruna smiles.
Alruna says,
'Hmmm'
Grumli says,
'Hmm. Looks like I missed some part of the message then...'
Alruna says,
'The thief has something to do with Rodcet Nife?'
Alruna says,
'Is he a priest of that church?'
Alruna raises
an eyebrow at Grumli.
Caitlin says,
'shakes her head.'
Grumli says,
'Either that, ot something against him. I think that some undead are involved'
Caitlin whispers.
Alruna says,
'Do you know something, child?'
Caitlin says,
'I can't talk here.'
Grumli says,
'And where undead are, my axe go'
Alruna moves
closer to hear her words.
Caitlin says,
'too many ears.'
Alruna whispers
to Caitlin.
Alruna says,
'Bring us where you can talk, then.'
Caitlin nods
and rises.
Caitlin says,
'Follow me.'
(Caitlin lead
Grumli and Alruna to her house in Qeynos. She brings them to the room where
Barrett used to live.)
Grumli listens
intently.
Caitlin says,
'Barrett often stays here ...'
Caitlin lowers
eyes to floor.
Alruna looks
about her.
Caitlin pulls
herself together.
Alruna
looks around curiously.
Caitlin says,
'I saw a barbarian from Halas several nights ago.'
Alruna smiles
as she sees where Barrett lived.
Alruna focuses
her gaze upon Caitlin.
Caitlin says,
'He was carrying something in wrappings.'
Alruna focuses
her gaze upon Caitlin.
Grumli says,
'interesting'
Alruna raises
an eyebrow at Caitlin.
Caitlin says,
'He tried selling it at the local guild, but they wouldn't have it.'
Caitlin breathes
deep and rubs her eyes.
Alruna folds
her arms as she considers this.
Alruna says,
'Do you know this man's name?'
Grumli says,
'What did he look like? Do you know where he is?'
Caitlin says,
'I saw him go into the sewers, I think he said his name was ... Sven ...Svennik.'
Grumli says,
'That's the name'
Alruna says,
'Very good !!'
Caitlin looks
grouchy.
Alruna claps
happily for Grumli - hurray!
Alruna says,
'Tunare has shown us the way !'
Alruna says,
'We must find this man though.... But I wonder....'
Alruna says,
'He went in the sewers you say?'
Alruna says,
'And so did Serinar...'
Alruna says,
'How ... convenient for her....'
Caitlin says,
'Yes. I think so.'
Alruna glares
at nothing in particular.
Grumli says,
'Where did this sorceress go? In the sewers too I suppose?'
Caitlin stares
icily at Alruna.
Caitlin says,
'Stop with the accusations.'
Alruna clenches
her fists at the thought of the vile sorceress.
Caitlin says,
'I know of her through Barrett.'
Alruna says,
'Can't you see?'
Grumli says,
'I don;t trust that woamn'
Caitlin says,
'If he trusts her so do I.'
Alruna says,
'Surely this is a plot to prevent us from learning how to free him! She
surely hired this mercenary to steal the artifacts !'
Caitlin gets
a cold look.
Alruna says,
'Child, heed my words.'
Grumli says,
'And you are nuts woamn. I don;t trust your wits. No offence'
Caitlin stomps
on the floorboards.
Alruna says,
'Barrett has shown us his noble character, his bold soul.'
Caitlin bgins
to look weepy again.
Alruna says,
'However, he has also proven to be... Somewhat.... Rash... And too trusting...'
Alruna says,
'Perhaps his trust in Serinar is misplaced?'
Alruna raises
an eyebrow at Caitlin.
Grumli says,
'I believe so'
Caitlin says,
'Perhaps his trust in you got him into this mess!'
Caitlin storms
off.
Alruna gasps
at Caitlin in astonishment.
Alruna says,
'Insolent child !'
Alruna glares
at nothing in particular.
Grumli says,
'Alruna, I don;t like this. It looks like a trap'
Alruna says,
'Can you believe her nerves?'
Alruna nods.
Alruna says,
'Yes it does!'
Alruna says,
'At least YOU see through this wicked witche's lies.'
Alruna says,
'What shall we do, now, Grumli? WHat shall we do?'
Grumli says,
'Although it is a trap, I feel it is my duty to help you.'
Grumli says,
'I think that the BArbarian woman told the truth'
Alruna nods.
Grumli says,
'I shall find that thief and get those items back'
Alruna says,
'The witch and the thief might be together in the sewers now, exchanging
the artifacts.'
Grumli says,
'And crrrush any undead on my way'
Alruna giggles.
Alruna says,
'So you shall !'
Grumli says,
'If so, we will intercept that sorceress'
Grumli says,
'Do you think se is really Barett's friend?'
Alruna says,
'No'
Alruna shakes
her head.
Grumli says,
'MY guess too'
Alruna says,
'I think she has bewitched him... He has played right into her hands.'
Alruna says,
'The vile... Cunning... Manipulative witch !!'
Alruna glares
at nothing in particular.
Grumli says,
'I am sure this witch is friends of the undead'
Grumli shivers.
Alruna says,
'We must work with haste... We need allies... I left some friends at an
Inn near the road leading to surefall glade, in the hills.'
Alruna says,
'I will go get them, and with their help, we will apprehend the thief.'
Grumli says,
'I hate to say this, but I think I might not be strong enough to slay that
woman if I have to'
Alruna says,
'I pray that we will not be too late, and that he will not have had time
to give the items to Serinar!'
Alruna comforts
Grumli.
Grumli says,
'Yes. Let's get thos friends of yours.'
Alruna says,
'You'll not be alone.'
Alruna says,
'I'll fight her to the very end as well !'
Grumli says,
'Ahhh'
Alruna nods
at Grumli.
Grumli says,
'If I have to die today, I want to fall by your side'
Alruna thanks
Grumli heartily.

But what of Serinar... Is she a the puppet mistress who engineer Barrett's capture, as Alruna suspects? Or is she a true friend, and genuinely concerned for Barrett's fate? Find out as Barrett's Mystery unfolds....
